Visual Alerts Address Everyday Sounds
NEW YORK CITY – 8 June 2009 – The first “Deaf Living Solutions” internet video report released by Deaf411 called “Living in an Audio World” highlights creative ways of coping in a society that is dependent on audio sounds for anyone who has a hearing loss.
“Many things that people take for granted in today’s fast-paced audio world can present challenges,” says Robert Harris, deaf owner of Harris Communications who sponsored the “Living in an Audio World” report, “Not being able to hear the doorbell or telephone ring can be frustrating. Watching the front door all day for an expected visit or delivery would not be practical. The same goes with missing an important telephone call when it rings.”
With the latest technology available for approximately 28 million Americans who are deaf or have varying degrees of hearing loss and senior citizens, there are more options to communicate by using videophones, text telephones and captioned telephones. How can someone, who can’t hear, or work in noisy environments, be alerted when the telephone is ringing? A Deaf411 announcer outlines various ways of alerting someone visually to the telephone or doorbell through use of visual alerting devices.
“Living in an Audio World” shares information on how you can set up your visual alerting device at home or work. Consumers who purchase visual alerts often feel much more relaxed, less frustrated and are able to answer the doorbell or telephone ringing with ease.
The “Deaf Living Solutions” internet video series, presented in American Sign Language with open captions, is produced by Deaf411, a marketing and public relations company. In April 2008, Deaf411 launched the “Deaf-Friendly Cities in the U.S.” website with a video and online survey. The final “Deaf-Friendly Cities in the U.S.” report is expected later this year, and will be made available to interested consumers free of charge.

10 Digit Numbering Extended to November 12
In the interest of informing you as soon as possible, attached is a just-released FCC order extending from June 30 to November 12 the deadline by which users of video relay and IP relay services will have to have registered for ten-digit numbers in order to be able to complete non-emergency calls. The extension is being granted to allow additional time for outreach to consumers, as well as to address any unresolved technical issues associated with the transition to ten-digit numbering. We have also attached a Consumer Advisory that explains the transition in more detail.
Persons with hearing and/or speech disabilities who use VRS and/or IP Relay are reminded, if they have not done so already, to complete the process of registering with the VRS or IP Relay default provider of their choice as soon as possible, and no later than November 12, 2009. As part of the registration process, a VRS and/or IP Relay user must register his or her physical location information (Registered Location) with a default provider and, in exchange, obtain a ten-digit geographic telephone number. After November 12, 2009, all VRS and IP Relay users must be registered with a default provider in order to place a non-emergency call through any VRS or IP Relay provider. In addition, after that date, VRS and IP Relay providers will no longer complete calls to a user's former "proxy" or "alias" number that may have been previously obtained from a provider.

To see an example of insensitivity to the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people, look no further than the CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings. As seen in blog posts from Matthew (a hearing? blogger), who reports on what happened when he asked Hastings about the lack of captions on Netflix's online video, and then the reaction from deaf blogger Jared, Hastings is an ignorant b******.

What did Hastings say that merits his being called an insensitive b******? According to Matthew: "Mr. Hastings said other sites didn't offer captions, and mentioned hulu.com as one of them." This is a grossly incorrect statement, as Matthew points out. Hulu.com DOES have some captioned video. But that's not all. Netflix's insensitive, ignorant CEO also said that when captioning technology was more widespread (i.e., improved) Netflix would "incorporate" it. Hello! The technology for online captioning has been available for years! And even that's not all. Hastings also had the nerve to exhibit a "let them eat cake" attitude, saying that deaf customers could get captioned DVDs in the mail! Finally, Hastings "agreed that adding captions wasn't an active agenda item," i.e., it was not important to Netflix.
What can the deaf and hard of hearing community do to change attitudes like Mr. Hastings' attitude? Captioning is not required on the Internet, so we have no choice but to fight! There is plenty we can do in this battle! We can launch a major negative publicity campaign to educate people, particularly people in the "hearing world" about this company's refusal to put captions on their online videos. We have many tools available to us.
What can you do in this "war" on Netflix? You can:
- Facebook! Post in your "what am I thinking about now" box, contact friends, set up Facebook groups devoted to getting Netflix to caption online video. Update: A Facebook group (over 400 as of June 2 and still growing) was set up: Netflix Watch-Instantly Needs Closed Captions! at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=72815765309.
- Update: We need mainstream media to become aware of this issue. If you know a technology/media technology or business reporter, columnist, or blogger through Facebook or another social networking site, tell them about how we want captions on Netflix and what Hastings said. If you are followed on Twitter by a technology/media technology or business reporter, columnist, or blogger send them a direct message about this.
- Set up a negative website that targets Netflix for their attitude. Maybe call it NetflixWontCaption.com.
- Blog. The more people who blog about this, the better. We need to strike while the iron's hot.
- Twitter! Twitter campaigns have been successful for other purposes.
- MySpace! Set up MySpace pages targeting Netflix.
- Email! If you are a Netflix customer, flood their email box with demands for captions online.
- If you belong to a deaf-related mailing list on for example Yahoo Groups, put the word out on your mailing list. Families with deaf and hard of hearing children especially need to be aware of this. It affects their child.
- Post a video on YouTube (there are deaf video sites, but YouTube will get the attention of hearing people).
- Old-fashioned letter writing. It can still have an impact.
- Other social networking sites - get the word out there.

Tate Tullier Selected As A Trailblazer
Tate Tullier was selected as one of the 10 trailblazers for Purple Communications. He received $1,000 to donate to the charity of his choice which is the Louisiana School for the Deaf for their after school program for the children who live on campus to do art related activities. If he gets the most votes he will receive another $10,000 to donate to the same charity, so it would definitely be a wonderful thing to make this contribution to the kids at the school who are away from home.

Dear LAD members:
It has been my pleasure to be your LAD president for two terms, and I want to say many thanks to my wonderful executive board, members at large, chapter representatives, and all members. It has been a very rewarding experience for me, serving the Deaf community, the Hard of Hearing, and the Deaf-Blind, especially during the crisis times of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Gustav. I learned a lot about the many different ways LAD can offer assistance to those in need.
It has been my pleasure to be your LAD president for two terms, and I want to say many thanks to my wonderful executive board, members at large, chapter representatives, and all members. It has been a very rewarding experience for me, serving the Deaf community, the Hard of Hearing, and the Deaf-Blind, especially during the crisis times of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Gustav. I learned a lot about the many different ways LAD can offer assistance to those in need.
Though the experiences we had with the hurricanes were a very sad time for all of us, I believe we were brought closer together through them. It helped us learn how to work together regardless of how bad the disaster was. During the Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita periods, LAD received a lot of donations from different organizations and people. LAD was able to donate all of that money to people who had to evacuate and who lost their homes because of the flooding caused by the hurricanes. I hope those people will be able to return to their homes and have normal lives again.
The LAD had a once in a lifetime opportunity to host the National Association of the Deaf conference in New Orleans last summer. Because of the dedication of our members, LAD was able to take the responsiblity of providing manpower for the week. I want to express my gratitude to those members who served on committees. They did an outstanding job, coming together as a team, and being responsible to follow through on their committments. Their efforts made a huge contribution to the success of the conference. I received many compliments from the NAD and others who recognized their many hours of work. They represented Louisiana well and I will never forget this memorable experience.
Last November, LAD celebrated its 100th Year Annviversary, with almost 200 people in attendance for the festivities. It was a day of great fun and fellowship as we looked back over LAD's one hundred years. And everyone enjoyed the variety shows and lots of good food. How exciting that LAD is still standing strong after one hundred years and now has another one hundred years to look forward to!
I hope that I will see all of you this Saturday, June 6, for the 46th Biennial LAD Conference. It will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Baton Rouge. thought I have decided that I will not run for Presidency again, the new president that you elect will have my support and help.
It has been my privelege to be your president. Many thanks to all for the tremendous experience and the fullfillment of serving the Louisiana Deaf community.

CSDVRS Now Known As The Z™
CLEARWATER, Fla. [June 3, 2009] — CSDVRS announced today that it is now known as The Z™. The switch reflects the company’s new platform, video products and services.
CSDVRS originated as a program under Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD), a not-for-profit deaf services agency headquartered in Sioux Falls, S.D. In late 2006, CSDVRS emerged as a private, for-profit video relay service (VRS) and relocated its headquarters to Clearwater, Fla.
“We are extremely grateful to CSD for allowing us to become the nation’s premier VRS provider and being the first to offer 24/7 services, along with Spanish VRS, video mail and personal 800 numbers,” said Sean Belanger, CSDVRS chief executive officer. “With the enormous success of our products and services, we are moving into a new era of video technology. The time has arrived for us to create our own identity, especially with our line-up of The Z™ products. In doing so, we are now able to move towards what we represent: innovation, quality, inclusiveness and commitment.”
Chris Wagner, CSDVRS vice president of marketing, explained that the new name is not only easy for people to remember, it is simpler to convey in sign language, as well. This change is also reflected online. Rolled out as part of the transition, the company’s web site has been redesigned to enhance customer experience. Visitors to The Z™ site (www.zvrs.com) will notice new features and easier navigation that make browsing more enjoyable and user friendly.
Wagner emphasized that, in spite of the changes, The Z™ still offers the same services and products customers have come to appreciate from CSDVRS, such as voice carry-over, Spanish VRS and video mail alerts.
“We continue to be the premier VRS provider, offering choices in videophones and service delivery that are unmatched,” Wagner said. “We strongly believe that every deaf and hard of hearing consumer should have options. That’s why we will continue to enhance our services and pursue even better quality as we grow as a company.”

We are searching for fluent ASL signers to interpret for a Women's conference (Seventh-Day Adventist) in Dallas, Texas on September 25 - 27, 2009 at Hilton Anatole Hotel on Stemmons Freeway. All day seminars on September 25 and 26, morning/brunch meeting on the 27th.
There will be around 15 deaf women.
