Ms. Irene Brewton White, age 86 of Winnfield, passed away, Monday, December 27, 2010 at Northern Louisiana Medical Center in Ruston.

Ms. White was born, January 3, 1924 in Winnfield. She was a member of Antioch Community Church in Brewton's Mill, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Jannie (Liles) Brewton, sister Nellie Oxford, and brother Clyde Brewton.

Survivors include her son Larry G. White and wife Alene, three grandsons Ethan, Dylan, and Kevan all of Oklahoma City, Ok., one brother Robert Brewton and wife Camille of Baton Rouge, La., one sister Betty Carr of Goldonna, La.

She is also survived by four nieces Cindy Huckaby, Janice Coleman, Donna Brewton, and Gloria Richardson and one nephew Bobby Brewton.

Graveside funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at the Antioch Cemetery near Brewton's Mill, La. with Reverends Darrell White and Huey White officiating. Friends may visit with the family in the Southen Funeral Home on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30p.m.

Medford William Magill

Surrounded by family and friends, he passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. A native of Hendrickson, Mo., he spent most of his adult life as a resident of Baton Rouge and was retired from the Louisiana School for the Deaf, where he was a vocational educator for 34 years. He was 80, born Jan. 15, 1930, to George Roy Magill and Nellie Mae Foster Magill in Hendrickson. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gertrude Ann Magill; two sons, Medford Jr. and wife Wendy Breard Magill, and Paul Magill and wife Susan Becnel Magill, of Atlanta; a daughter, Victoria Magill Cookson, of Springfield, Mo.; and four beloved grandchildren, Paul Magill Jr., Kelly Magill, Molly Magill and Trenton Magill. He is also survived by a brother, Gordon Magill, of Popular Bluff, Mo.; and sister, Lula Belle Taylor and husband Bill Taylor, of Kansas City, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Clyde, Don, Eugene and Norman; and sisters, Mary and Ida. Class president and valedictorian of the Missouri School for the Deaf, Class of 1949, he earned a bachelor of science in 1954 from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Living his class motto of "Deeds, Not Words," he was a passionate advocate for the deaf community of Louisiana, serving in leadership positions of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf, National Association of the Deaf, Louisiana Commission for the Deaf, Louisiana Association of the Deaf, the Baton Rouge Association of the Deaf and several more state and local committees. As an ambassador for the deaf community, he was instrumental in the establishment of the statewide Louisiana Relay Service in use today for the deaf to communicate via telephone or video phone. He spent many hours working charity bingo for the Louisiana Association of the Deaf. He was an avid fisherman and the first president of The National Bass Association of the Deaf, founded in 1967. He served as president for three years and participated in 32 annual tournaments. He also enjoyed many years of bowling with the Baton Rouge Deaf Bowling Association. He was a talented woodcraftsman and all around jack-of-all-trades. With all of his personal and professional accomplishments, his sense of humor is very likely what people will remember most about Medford. Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Sunday, Oct. 24, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation resumes at the funeral home Monday, Oct. 25, from 8 a.m. until funeral and burial service at 9 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Howard Hall. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of the MICU of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center as well as the Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Mid City for their compassionate care. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 15, 2010 at a 2:00 PM Mass of Christian Burial in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Scott for Monique Ann Mouton, 45, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Lafayette General Medical Center.

Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Reverend Thomas Voorhies, Pastor of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Reverend Gary Schexnayder, Pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Crowley, will con-celebrate. Lectors will be Cora Mouton and Cindy Mouton. Giftbearers will be Hannah Savoie and Jessie Mouton. Karen Broussard, vocalist, accompanied on the organ by Lisa Roy Sheppert, will sing for the services, "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman", "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer".

Survivors include her parents, John Ray and Myra Dumesnil Mouton of Scott; two sisters, Leah Savoie and her husband, Carl and Myra Louise Mouton; two brothers, Johnny Mouton and his wife, Cora and Martin Mouton and his wife, Cindy; her nieces and nephews, Jason Mouton, and his wife, Jamie, Jeremy Mouton, Ray Savoie, Jessie Mouton, Garrett Mouton and her Godchild Hannah Savoie; one great niece, Jaden Mouton; and her canine and feline buddies, Noel, Jingle Bell, Beau, Chance, Libby, Stella and Lucky, who will miss her dearly.

A native of Lafayette, Louisiana and resident of Scott for most of her life, Monique was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, great aunt, and friend to all who knew her. She graduated from the Louisiana School for the Deaf in 1984 and went to Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., where she earned her Bachelor's degree in physical education, the University of Western Maryland, where she earned her Master's Degree in deaf education and St. Thomas University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL earning a Master's degree in Pastoral Ministry for the Deaf. Monique worked for the Diocese of Lafayette at the Catholic Deaf Center for most of her life, taught sign language and was the Cajun Camp Director. She was passionate about running and loved to exercise at Red's, was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, loved to travel and especially enjoyed her coffee from CC's Coffee House. Monique attend Mass regularly at the Catholic Deaf Center in Lafayette. She enjoyed spending time with her animals, family, and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Mouton, Martin Mouton, Carl Savoie, Ray Savoie, Jason Mouton and Garret Mouton. Honorary Pallbearer will be, Jeremy Mouton.

A Rosary will be recited by Reverend Gary Schexnayder on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 6:00 PM in Martin & Castille's SCOTT Location.

The family requests that visitation be observed on Thursday from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM and will continue on Friday from 8:00 AM until time of services.

The Louisiana School for the Deaf presents “Story Café” with Missy Mills.

Please join us for a cup of hot chocolate and a special presentation on American Sign Language (ASL). The morning will include information about the history of ASL and a brief review of ASL vocabulary signs from the story. Missy Mills will read the storybook “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats in ASL and provide tips for reading stories in ASL. We will wrap up with a craft activity and social time.

Missy has 10 book bags to give away as door prizes. Each book bag contains the book, “The Snowy Day”, a VHS tape of the story in ASL, and tips for reading a story in ASL to your child.

Barnes & Noble is sponsoring a Bookfair on September 29-30 with a portion of proceeds going to the Louisiana School for the Deaf. To kick off activities, author Jewell Parker Rhodes will visit LSD on September 28. She will present excerpts from her children’s novel, Ninth Ward, a powerful story of Hurricane Katrina, the Ninth Ward and a young girl’s bravery. LSD students (grades 4-12) will each receive a signed copy of Ms. Rhodes’ book.
On September 29 and 30, Barnes & Noble will sponsor activities for LSD students at their Corporate Woods store at 2590 Citiplace Court. Storytelling, mural painting, cupcake decorating and NOOK workshops will be enjoyed by students from Preschool to 12th grade!

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2010, at a 11:00 AM in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille in Lafayette for Andrus Joseph Broussard, 77, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at his residence in Lafayette.

Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery in Maurice.

Reverend Allen Breaux, Associate Pastor of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Scott, LA will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be Christine Gary and Martine Beard. Jodi Bollich, organist and soloist, will sing "Amazing Grace", "Be Not Afraid", "Here I Am Lord" and "Ave Maria" for the services.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lily Duhon Broussard; one brother, Adlas Broussard and his wife Annie; and one sister, Patricia Melancon and her husband Terrell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey Broussard and Beulah Trahan Broussard; and one sister, Audrey Mae Broussard.

Andrus was born and raised in Lafayette. He attended school at the Louisiana State School for the Deaf where he starred as the quarterback on the school football team. He spent most of his working career as a painter at the Louisiana State School for the Deaf in Baton Rouge and was a retired Louisiana State Employee. Andrus was an avid sports fan and loved watching football and basketball. Andrus Broussard will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Jude Sellers, C.J. Sellers, Paul Sellers, Adam Sellers, Paul Gary and Johnny Beard.

Visitation was observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Lafayette location on Friday, September 17, 2010 from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM and will continue today, Saturday, from 9:00 AM until time of service.

A Rosary was prayed Friday, September 17, 2010 at 7:00 in Martin & Castille Funeral Home.

Deaf Education Administrators Seminar - Wednesday June 9, 2010
This one-day training opportunity is designed for principals, district coordinators / supervisors, directors, teachers and anyone interested in services and programs for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Mr. Kevin Williams, who helped create the Educational Interpreters Performance Assessment (EIPA), will share insights and ideas about key issues related to deaf education. Kevin will talk about language deficits, the impact that has on academics, and strategies to decrease the deficits. He will discuss language choices from speech, to cuing, to signing, resources (teachers, interpreters, materials, etc.) and take your questions and concerns about providing efficient and effective services to students who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Registration is 8:30 – 9:00. Workshop is 9:00 – 4:00 with an hour for lunch. Lunch is on your own.

Educational Interpreter Mentor Training - Thursday June 10, 2010
This training is by invitation only. This one-day training opportunity is designed for mentors of educational interpreters (state mentor and district lead interpreters). This training will address a variety of skills for mentoring interpreters through the tenants of the EIPA such as space, classifiers, key vocabulary, and fingerspelling. Use of prosody in interpretation will be the overriding focus of the workshop

Signing Exact English – July 12 – 16 in Baton Rouge, LA. The Louisiana School for the Deaf is allowing us to utilize their facilities for this workshop series. The SEE Center will present a weeklong workshop for educational interpreters who use or want to learn about SEE. Five instructors work for a week with interpreters of all skill levels. Focus on fingerspelling, grammar, vocabulary and a variety of skills designed to improve the skills of classroom interpreters.

Wilson Leo LeBlanc Wilson Leo LeBlanc, age 75, was born September 6, 1933 in Morse, Louisiana to Joe and Electa LeBlanc. He died July 20, 2009 in Groves, Texas. He graduated from the Louisiana School for the Deaf and was very active in the Deaf Community. He was also an active member of the Catholic Deaf Church in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was a shoe cobbler and enjoyed working with leather. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dallas LeBlanc and a sister, Marie Trahan. He is survived by his son, Sal LeBlanc and his wife Susan of Twenty-Nine Palms, California; daughters, Jenny Moore and her husband Chris, Sr. of Bridge City, Texas and Kim Hunt and her husband Peter of Beaumont, Texas; brothers, Wilton LeBlanc (twin) and Prevert Lee LeBlanc of Louisiana; sisters, Joyce Myers of Beaumont, Texas, Betty LeJune, Eula Plaslance, Anna Crochet, Viola LeBlanc of Louisiana and Earline Menard of Vidor, Texas and 8 grandchildren and many close family members and friends. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Margaret LeBlanc of Lumberton, Texas and long time companion, Audrey Edgley of Lake Charles, Louisiana. There will be a gathering for family and friends on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 pm at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 9:00 AM, Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at the Grammier- Oberle Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Nathan Keating officiating. Committal service will be held at 12:30 pm, Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Highland Memory Gardens, 6325 Common Street, Lake Charles, Louisiana. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons, Jacob Allen Hunt, Matthew Adam Hunt, Jeremy David Hunt, Bryan James Hunt, Christopher Aaron Moore, Jr. and Justin Wilson LeBlanc. Services are under the direction of Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home, Port Arthur, Texas.

Deville, Laura Belle Domingue

Laura Belle Domingue Deville died peacefully in her home on Thursday, July 16. She was a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Scott, Louisiana. To those who loved her, their lives will never be the same as she was a loving mother, grandmother, loyal friend and advocate.

She was born on October 23rd, 1926 to Lucas and Edith Domingue. She grew up in Duson, LA and graduated from Duson Elementary and then from Scott High School in 1943 at the age of 16. She graduated from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now known as University of Louisiana – Lafayette in 1946 graduating in less than three years where she was president of the Girls Club – the largest female organization on campus. She returned to teach at Duson Elementary where she was a 4H leader, who lead the school to many awards and was even their boxing coach.

She met her husband Elliott Deville, who served in the Navy in the South Pacific, through writing letters during World War II as part of the Girl’s Club college project to support the troops. They married in 1950 and settled in Iota, LA where she taught science for two years before starting a family. They were married for 45 years.

In 1952, her first son Glen E. Deville was born deaf. His deafness would help change the course of deaf education in Louisiana. A courageous woman, she researched deafness, learned of special courses, and realizing there was limited services available for deaf children, began a journey to crusade for change. She was a relentless volunteer for the deaf and handicapped individuals and served as an unpaid lobbyist until the State of Louisiana funded and completed the new Louisiana School for the Deaf. She changed laws to better the lives of deaf individuals. She was equally involved with her three hearing children and devoted to her family, supporting all of their interests. Her true gift to us was her unconditional love, and her love was unwavering.

She was proud of being part of what Tom Brokaw called the “Greatest Generation.” In 1958, her husband and brother started a business, and she was integrally involved in the start-up of the business , which is known today as Chem Spray South, Inc. She was the CEO of our family – the Chief Emotional Officer. Though thought of as a homemaker, she was a capable businesswoman and was a partner with her husband in every way.

She cherished her family, was a champion for the rights of deaf people and believed in her Catholic faith. She was an agent of change, fought for the underdog and was steady, dignified, intelligent, tenacious, fair, a fighter, tough, accepting, honest, determined, compassionate, forgiving, witty, and most of all loving.

Laura Belle Domingue Deville left=2 0this world a better place and her spirit lives in all of her children and their spouses, grand children, great grandchildren and the family and friends, who have been so blessed to be loved by this wonderful, loving being. Visitation will take place on Monday, July 20 at Rabenhorst Funeral Home located at 823 Government Street beginning at 2 p.m. with a special memorial service at 6 p.m. A mass will be held on Tuesday, July 21 at 10:00am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Grand Prairie, LA, followed by a Catholic burial at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery.

She is survived by her only daughter Karen Anne Deville of Baton Rouge and two sons, Charles Dean Deville and wife Sabrina of Clinton, LA and John Edward Deville and wife Brigitte of Prairieville, LA; daughter -in-law Karen Solet Deville Arabie (wife of the late Glen Deville) of Baton Rouge, LA. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Kristie, Vera, and Gabriel Deville of Baton Rouge, LA; Dean, Jacob, Robbie, and Katie Deville of Clinton, LA, Scottie Campbell of Baker, Brandon and Christopher Deville of Pineville; Hollie Deville of Prairieville, LA; one great grandson J.E. Deville; five step -grandchildren, Hythem Elsaleh and wife Kimmie, Tee Copler and husband James, Laila Elsaleh, Ahmed Elsaleh, and Sean Elsaleh; eight step great grand children Summer, Noah, Bailey, Aaralyn, London, Abriana, Layton, and Landon. Also survived by two special friends Leola Stevens and Bunnie Cannon.

She was prec eded in death by her beloved husband Elliott Deville, son Glen Elliott Deville, mother and father, Marie Edith Benton and Lucas Domingue; and brother Lucas Domingue Jr.

Photographer honored as trailblazer in deaf community

Tate Tullier was 12 years old when he borrowed his mother Ida Tullier’s camera and began to take portraits of his younger cousin and friends. The St. Amant native said he was inspired by the ones he saw in magazines and desired to emulate them. So began what has evolved into a lucrative career as a professional photographer.

Tullier made the decision to follow his dream after graduating from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., in 2003. He briefly worked as a recruiter for the university before successfully pursuing a professional photography career in New York City.

This past Father’s Day, Tullier, who is deaf, was honored by Purple Communications, one of the nation’s leading providers of text and video relay and onsite interpreting services for the hearing impaired, as one of its “Dream Bigger” campaign’s 10 Trailblazers in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Trailblazers are “visionaries” who have broken down barriers and/or established new status quos to improve the overall quality of life for all members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

At the June 21 celebration at the Baton Rouge Marriott, Brandon Arthur with Purple Communications presented Tullier with a $1,000 donation to his chosen charity — the Louisiana School for the Deaf. But the school could receive $10,000 if Tullier is chosen as Trailblazer of the Year, which will be announced in Washington, D.C., this October. All he needs to do is garner the most votes.

As he explained in an e-mail, “It certainly is an honor to be chosen as one of Purple Communications’ 10 trailblazers in the deaf community … I tell people that I much prefer to be behind the scenes when it comes to my work, but the charity portion of this campaign was enough for me to get involved. I get a chance to donate $10,000 just because I have an awesome job. INSTRUCTION AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
1. Provides sign language instruction, general and specialized curriculum, in a class, small group, or individual setting.
2. Develops and presents workshops on a variety of topics, related to Deafness and American Sign Language (ASL).
3. Provides training to pre-service and existing Sign Language instructors.
4. Exhibits understanding of handicapped children and their needs, especially the hearing impaired children served by the school.

Tate Tullier Selected As A Trailblazer

Tate Tullier was selected as one of the 10 trailblazers for Purple Communications.  He received $1,000 to donate to the charity of his choice which is  the Louisiana School for the Deaf for their after school program for the children who live on campus to do art related activities.  If he gets the most votes he will receive another $10,000 to donate to the same charity, so it would definitely be a wonderful thing to make this contribution to the kids at the school who are away from home.

Also, he is having a ceremony on the 21st at the Baton Rouge Marriot. Anyone is welcome to attend! There will be interpreters for those of you who are hearing. You need to RVSP on the same page where his showcase is on the website below.
