Medford William Magill

Medford William Magill

Surrounded by family and friends, he passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. A native of Hendrickson, Mo., he spent most of his adult life as a resident of Baton Rouge and was retired from the Louisiana School for the Deaf, where he was a vocational educator for 34 years. He was 80, born Jan. 15, 1930, to George Roy Magill and Nellie Mae Foster Magill in Hendrickson. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gertrude Ann Magill; two sons, Medford Jr. and wife Wendy Breard Magill, and Paul Magill and wife Susan Becnel Magill, of Atlanta; a daughter, Victoria Magill Cookson, of Springfield, Mo.; and four beloved grandchildren, Paul Magill Jr., Kelly Magill, Molly Magill and Trenton Magill. He is also survived by a brother, Gordon Magill, of Popular Bluff, Mo.; and sister, Lula Belle Taylor and husband Bill Taylor, of Kansas City, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Clyde, Don, Eugene and Norman; and sisters, Mary and Ida. Class president and valedictorian of the Missouri School for the Deaf, Class of 1949, he earned a bachelor of science in 1954 from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Living his class motto of "Deeds, Not Words," he was a passionate advocate for the deaf community of Louisiana, serving in leadership positions of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf, National Association of the Deaf, Louisiana Commission for the Deaf, Louisiana Association of the Deaf, the Baton Rouge Association of the Deaf and several more state and local committees. As an ambassador for the deaf community, he was instrumental in the establishment of the statewide Louisiana Relay Service in use today for the deaf to communicate via telephone or video phone. He spent many hours working charity bingo for the Louisiana Association of the Deaf. He was an avid fisherman and the first president of The National Bass Association of the Deaf, founded in 1967. He served as president for three years and participated in 32 annual tournaments. He also enjoyed many years of bowling with the Baton Rouge Deaf Bowling Association. He was a talented woodcraftsman and all around jack-of-all-trades. With all of his personal and professional accomplishments, his sense of humor is very likely what people will remember most about Medford. Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Sunday, Oct. 24, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation resumes at the funeral home Monday, Oct. 25, from 8 a.m. until funeral and burial service at 9 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Howard Hall. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of the MICU of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center as well as the Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Mid City for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Association for the Deaf at www.nad.org or by mail to 8630 Fenton St., Suite 820, Silver Spring, MD 20910-3819. National Lifeline and Link Up Telephone Discount Awareness Week

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has joined the National Association of Regulatory Commissioners (NARUC) and the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates (NASUCA) to call attention to the second annual "National Lifeline and Link Up Telephone Discount Awareness Week," which takes place this year September 13 - 19. The observation began with a Congressional Briefing on Monday, September 13, that outlined for Members of Congress and their staffs the efforts being made to promote awareness of these two telephone assistance programs.

"Lifeline" involves discounts on monthly charges for a primary residential telephone line, which might be wireless service. "Link Up" involves a discount on the cost of initiating the primary telephone service for a residence, including the activation of a wireless phone that serves as the primary residential telephone. The discounts are available throughout the country, including an enhanced discount on Tribal lands. In general, consumers at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, or who participate in one or more of a number of other assistance programs, are eligible for Lifeline and Link Up.

Various state and local agencies throughout the country are participating with outreach activities and events. The "Lifeline" and "Link Up" programs help ensure that all Americans can get basic telephone service by providing discounts to consumers who might not otherwise be able to afford service. Recent statistics demonstrate that of the 25.7 million eligible, 8.2 million households participate, or roughly a 32 percent national participation rate for 2009.

To help call attention to the availability of these programs, the FCC, NARUC and NASUCA urge government agencies and non-profit organizations to help disseminate information on Lifeline and Link Up to their constituents. More information about the programs and how to apply is available at www.lifeline.gov or http://www.usac.org/li/low-income/apply-for-support.aspx.

| Visit Guest Book

Julie Ann Mowad, 55 of Oakdale, Louisiana died on September 1, 2010 after a courageous and optimistic battle with breast cancer.
Julie was born on December 31, 1954, in Alexandria, Louisiana to Anthony and Mary Ann Mowad.
Julie is survived by her two sisters, Toni Mowad Cameron and her husband Don of Shreveport and Beth Mowad Strother and her husband Scotty of Baton Rouge.
She is also survived by her nephews Anthony Cameron, Will Strother, and Sam Strother, her nieces Donna Cameron, Melissa LaCour, and Jennifer Cameron, as well as, many children in her family that affectionately called her "Aunt Julie".
Julie is a graduate of Oakdale High School, the University of New Orleans, and McNeese State University where she earned her Master's Degree in Education. She was an educator and administrator in Allen Parish at Oakdale Middle and High Schools.
She was an avid sports fan and coached girls' high school softball for many years. Her friends fondly recall her passionate love for LSU sports, particularly football. She definitely bled purple and gold. Julie loved her nephews, nieces, and cousins, and although she had no children of her own, she had many children to whom she was a nurturer, role model, and loving guardian. Even during the time of her illness, her faith and optimism were always exhibited in her courageous fight with cancer.
The family would like to thank Drs. Laura Falcon, Brien Bienvenu, and Mike Rolfsen for their wise and compassionate care of Julie during her very complex illness.
Visitation will be on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at Rush Funeral Home Oakdale from 4 PM until 9:00 PM, with a rosary at 7:00 PM. On Friday, September 3, 2010, visitation will be at the funeral home at 9 AM, with mass of Christian burial at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11:00 AM.

Katrina Information Needed from NOLA Deaf Community

Hello Members of Deaf Community of Greater New Orleans,

In few days it would be 5 years that Hurricane Katrina had affected many of our lives. Three words that I have been seeing a lot on Fox 8 News this week that says remember, recover and renew. We have come a long way remembering, recovering and renewing our lives that Katrina had affected us all. Some have returned to New Orleans, some have relocated and some have passed away within past 5 years. Katrina may have blown causing a lot of damages to our homes, but Katrina could not blow away our love for Deaf Community of Greater New Orleans, our love for New Orleans, and our faith in Jesus Christ.

Barbara and I had set up list of names people that were lost when we all got scattered away and the listing helps to find the members of NOLA Deaf Community almost 5 years ago and I want to set up a listing once again but this time to find where are they now.

We would need your help to let us know where exactly they are living now and you may want to provide your contact info (it can be email address or vp #) if you would like to post it in the listing. There may be some new people that moved to New Orleans after Katrina, you are welcome to add your name or add others' names and also if we are missing some names that were here before Katrina please do send us the information. Carla Hugger will be providing assistance for Barbara and I.

Please reply to:
John Lovas at jclovaspager@gmail.com
Barbara Lovas at bblovas1@yahoo.com
Carla Hugger at CFHugger@cox.net

The listing is below for you to look at and add any necessary information.

Have a blessed day,

John Lovas, member of Deaf Community of Greater ReNew Orleans

Every year millions of healthy high-quality plants go unsold and are
destroyed.

They go to the dump,

They get plowed under,

They get burned or buried.

It's a huge waste.

They come from the very same growers that supply many of the most

famous garden catalogs. I know because I'm an avid gardener and
horticultural

photographer. I've taken a lot of the photos you see in many of those
same catalogs.

I also strongly support the sheltered workshop movement.
Hundreds-of-thousands

of workers with disabilities find meaningful jobs in workshops all across
the country.

The ongoing problem is to find work to be done.

We started this web site to help solve both problems. We find unsold

nursery stock and have it packaged by sheltered workshops.

We give away the plants to anyone who will send shipping and processing.

Free Trees and Plants.com is not a nonprofit charity. We do not ask for,

or accept, contributions or offer paid memberships. Except for shipping
and processing,

Free Trees and Plants .com is a self-supporting project.

Distribution of the free plants is on a first reserved, first served
basis.

When you make your reservation, you will get a confirmation. It will show
your

reservation number and what free plants you reserved.

All plants are shipped dormant and bare-root, just like most catalog
stock.

We will send your free plants by standard mail.

Shipping and processing covers the cost of:

digging

washing

inspection

transportation

size sorting

unit grouping

hydro dipping

packaging labor

packaging materials

labeling

addressing

postal sorting

and postage to your door.

Every step is done manually.

Shipping and processing is only $7.95 per unit. Some catalogs appear to
charge

less for shipping and handling. They include part of the cost in the price

of the plants, we can't.

Your plants are FREE. Every plant is as good as, or better than, those

you see in expensive catalogs at high prices. The only difference is

that, unless you want these plants, they may go to waste.

You get free plants. You help stop a huge waste. Workers with disabilities

get meaningful work and a paycheck. Everyone wins.

Happy planting,

http://www.freetreesandplants.com/cherylwelcome1-copy.gif

P.S. If you aren't satisfied with your free plants we will replace them
without further

cost or send you a refund.

Government Seeks to Employ More People with Disabilities

Government Seeks to Employ More People with Disabilities

On the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, President
Obama July 26, signed an executive order aimed at increasing federal hiring
of persons with disabilities. According to the White House, the executive
order fulfills a pledge by the president to make the federal government a
model employer of people with disabilities.

The executive order establishes mechanisms such as mandatory training for
hiring managers and requires agencies to prepare strategic plans to be
approved by the Office of Personnel Management and the Office of Management
and Budget.

The order also requires OPM to develop model guidelines and assistance for
hiring people with disabilities, report to the president about progress, and
publicize results on a website as a way to promote transparency, the White
House said. Obama held a signing ceremony on the lawn of the White House,
attended by cabinet secretaries, administration officials, and advocates for
the disabled. The president said it was a honor to be with the audience on
the 20th anniversary of "one of the most comprehensive civil rights bills in
the history of this country."

He said it was the goal of his administration to advance the ADA so that not
just the letter of the law, but the spirit of the law, is applied across the
country. Signed under Bush Administration Obama said he spoke with former
President George H.W. Bush, under whose administration the ADA was signed,
just prior to the ceremony. "Today, as we commemorate what the ADA
accomplished, we celebrate who the ADA was all about. It was about the young
girl in Washington state who just wanted to see a movie in her hometown
theater, but was turned away because she had cerebral palsy," Obama said.
Separately, the president issued a proclamation declaring July 26 the
anniversary of the ADA.

The proclamation also stated that the federal government is committed to
leading by example in hiring people with disabilities, with focused efforts
to recruit, retain, and support these public servants. "In partnership with
the many federal agencies and departments with ADA responsibilities, my
administration will uphold strong and meaningful enforcement of the ADA to
eliminate discrimination in employment, housing, public services, and
community accommodations," the proclamation stated. The president also urged
all Americans to visit Disability.gov for comprehensive disability-related
information and resources.
