American Sign Language Vocabulary Expansion
Presenter: Barbara Lovas, ThD

Come join us for a fun filled interactive workshop. We will focus on vocabulary expansion with an emphasis on words in relationship to their glossed term and/or related word groups. Discussion of word origin and recognition of gestural components within each word group will provide helpful aids for memorization of the new words taught. Memorization tools and interactive games will make this an enjoyable and educational workshop!

Confusion turns into violent traffic stop for deaf man
April 8, 2009 FORT WORTH - A deaf man ended up with a broken nose after he found himself in a struggle with a Fort Worth police officer.
While the incident happened over one year ago, the video that captured it was just released.
It began with Christopher Ferrell, 43, being pulled over in his maroon sedan for speeding.
Ferrell reached for his identification to inform the officer of his disability.
"He is deaf," said Paul Goetz, Ferrell's attorney. "He is hearing impaired."
But, Officer J.A. Miller said he was concerned Ferrell was reaching for a gun. Miller withdrew his gun, grabbed Ferrell, swung him around and slammed his head into the rear windshield.
"He was trying to show his identification to the officer so that the officer would know that he was simply unable to communicate with him on a normal basis," Goetz said.
Ferrell was then forced into the car.
"It did break his nose," Goetz said of the incident. "There was a lot of blood."
Fort Worth police did discipline Miller over the incident.
"He was suspended for two days without pay for rough handling Ferrell, and for bumping the back of his car," "Miller is currently appealing this decision."
"This isolated incident doesn't reflect the professional quality service that the Fort Worth Police Department provides to the citizens of Fort Worth," said Sgt. Pedro Criado, with the Fort Worth Police Department.
Sgt. Criado said officers now have access to language interpreters who can get to a scene within 30 minutes of a traffic stop.
While Fort Worth did not admit liability for the 2007 incident, the city decided Wednesday to pay $50,000 to Ferrell to stop a lawsuit that could have ended with a heftier price tag.

What is iTransition College Camp?
A true-to-life college experience in which students learn how to function in a real college environment.
Students will learn to develop and implement appropriate postsecondary transition plans.
iTransition College Camp will increase students' knowledge of accommodations, assistive technologies, leadership skills, and other exciting aspects of college life. The program is open to
students from ages 16 to graduating seniors who reside in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, Mississippi and Oklahoma.
At iTransition College Camp, Students will: Participate in workshops covering topics such as self advocacy, transitioning, assistive technologies, and college survival skills Interact with other students who have hearing impairment
Spend four days on a college campus
Participate in fun social activities in the Little Rock area
Develop an individualized, online e-portfolio to aid them in postsecondary transition

Parents are invited to attend iTransition College Camp Closing Program on Saturday, July 11, 2009 with their students. It is an opportunity for parents to acquire valuable transition information and learn about their child's College Camp experience. Please indicate on the application if parents plan to attend.

Focusing on professionals who are new to serving individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind, this 9-credit orientation program offers 4 weeks of intensive ASL instruction as well as information on such topics as the range of assistive technology, working with individuals with cochlear implants, and what practitioners need to know to better serve deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind consumers. Selected applicants benefit from Rehabilitation Services Administration grant funding, which covers tuition and provides a $2000 stipend (a reduced stipend is awarded to those participants who reside within a commutable distance to WOU). The stipend can be used to defray housing and transportation costs, meals, etc. A long-form application and three reference letters must be submitted by April 1, 2009. | PEPNet College Guide NOW ONLINE! PEPNet is happy to announce that the PEPNet College Guide, an online version of the publication College and University Programs for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students, is now available at: http://www.pepnet. org/rescolguide. asp The College Guide joins the ranks of other online resources available to help students, parents, and guidance counselors search the locations, majors, and access services of hundreds of colleges in the United States. Only the College Guide, however, lists postsecondary institutions with known programs serving deaf and hard of hearing students. Each institution listed in the Guide participated in a national survey of postsecondary programs serving deaf/hh students. Some of these institutions may not have a program specifically for deaf and hard of hearing students, but all provide support/accessibili ty services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Because the Guide presents information self-reported by the programs, editors cannot assume responsibility for the accuracy of the information. For more than 30 years, Gallaudet University and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), a college of Rochester Institute of Technology, collaborated on College and University Programs for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students as a public service. In 2008, responsibility for the project, which is updated every two to three years, shifted to PEPNet. While previous guides have been published in booklet form (the twelfth edition is available through LuLu online publishing), PEPNet decided that an online version-renamed the PEPNet College Guide-- would make the information accessible to a broader range of users. PEPNet will update the Guide in 2009 by conducting a survey of postsecondary programs that provide support/accessibili ty services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
