Prohibits corporal punishment

HB (House Bill)571 by state Representative Norton –Prohibits corporal punishment in public elementary and secondary schools in Louisiana.

In the recent past BESE voted to support a ban on corporal punishment and authorized the state Superintenent of Schools to discuss possible state legislation on it.

If you have information about children/students who have been harmed by the use of corporal punishment please let us know. Advocates following this bill in the state legislature may need letters and calls from parents and/or other concerned citizens and it would be great to identify some who would testify before a legislative committee.

Feel free to respond to this message and let me know if you want info you share posted to LaDisability Talk;forwarded to advocates following the bill or both. LaDisabilityTalk@yahoogroups.com

It time we make an effort to get schools to comply w/ the Juvenile Justice Act and implement school wide Positive Behavioral Supports. (And individual PBS plans for those who need them.) A good way to get there is to get rid of the ability to hit children (Currently parents have to know to submit a letter saying they don't give permission for the school to spank the child.)
